Mike Nelson, a brief resume of his contributions to BOK and Orienteering
in general
In naming the BOK Trot in Mike's name, it was thought only right and proper
to explain to those who did not have the privilege of knowing him, his contributions
to orienteering. There is not enough space to include all of these; so this
is merely a listing of his major involvements.
- Came to Orienteering via Scouting in Nailsea.
- 1972 became BOK's 2nd ever Chairman, and did a further 3 years stint
later on.
- Controlled/Organised many events including the JK 1979 in Devon.
- Was a prolific mapper winning the Chichester Trophy and many other accolades.
- Enthused about computers, pioneering the introduction of IT to BOK,
and involving others with his infectious innovative projects.
- Was Membership Secretary and edited the Klub newsletter for a considerable
period.
- Fostered links with Avon Schools, and later became Membership Secretary
of the British Schools O A.
- Always ready to help and advise newcomers and other people
- Ran the SW Ultrasport mobile shop together with Mary from their Orange
VW Camper van for it seems countless years.
- All in all he was regarded as a great friend, by anyone who came in
contact with him. He passed away in March 2007 at the very young age of 74.
It was very appropriate that the first Mike Nelson BOK Trot was held
on Brierley, formerly known as ‘The Pludds’, for in the late 1970's Mike went
out with Dudley Budden to explore this unknown piece of land. They returned
enthused by the variety of terrain, and became part of the team that produced
the very first map of the area.
