Orienteering this Sunday, 25th November 2007, at Cannop Ponds, Forest of Dean

Bristol Orienteering Klub's next event takes place this Sunday, 25th November 2007, at Cannop Ponds, Forest of Dean. The event incorporates a stage of the 2007/2008 South West Orienteering League (the SWOA Galoppen).

Seasoned orienteers will be travelling from as far afield as Cornwall and Dorset to enjoy the challenges of the top class Forest of Dean terrain, but the event is equally suitable for beginners to the sport. Families are well catered for, with a string course for young children and a range of colour coded courses suitable for all ages - why not make a day of it and take in some of the local attractions after the event?

You don't have to be a member of a club in order to take part - new faces are always welcome. If you are a beginner, look out for the helper wearing an "ask me" tabard or simply ask at the registration tent.

Queries about the event should be directed to the organiser, Christine Farr (contact details on the Event Details webpage ).

Location

Car parking is at Russell's Inclosure (national grid reference SO623101), off the minor road running north/south between Mallards Pike and Speech House:
Follow the orienteering signs from nearby road junctions and obey the marshals' instructions when parking.

Courses

The following colour coded courses are on offer: white, yellow, orange, light green, green, blue and brown; these courses are graded according to technical difficulty and length - click here for a more detailed description of what the colour standards mean.

There will also be a string course for very young children, where the competitors use a simplified child-friendly map and are guided around the course by a string laid on the ground (or by ribbons tied on branches).

Start Times

Registration 10:00am to 12:00pm. Start times 10:30am to 1:00pm. Courses close at 3:30pm.

Entry Fees

From £1.50 to £8 dependent on age and course plus £1 to hire an electronic tag (free for juniors) if you don't have your own . Discount of £2 for senior members of British Orienteering. Non-members may claim a £2 discount at their first three BOK events (ask for details). Charges are "per map/tag", so you only pay one fee if you run as a team using a single map and tag.
